    TJ vs. the usual contenders

There are a couple of other DPOY contenders, but these two guys usually dominate the media conversation. ALL of the numbers (all) tell a different story.

If he gets 2-3 sacks Saturday and the Steelers win I think he has a good shot. It didn’t help that he got shut out Sunday.

He did almost get injured again because he was being held so badly. They are letting lineman maul him beyond anything I have seen. The offensive tackles now are allowed to let Watt get past them, and then they grab him in a way that is sometimes worse than a tackle. 350 lb men grab him and then hang on him with their body weight and pull him to the ground. Literally, nearly every play he isn't double and triple teamed he is just bear hugged or worse and it isn't called.

I don't blame him for being beyond pissed.

The more they don't call it, the more holding occurs. It's criminal. So much for rules to protect players.

Every rule, and every enforcement of a rule, is designed to aid the offense, and limit the defense.

There were at least three plays that I thought Watt blew a knee out on.

I think that’s what it will take to spur action from the league. Multiple “star” pass rushers with career altering injuries.

I think the people in the national sports media talk to each other and watch and listen to each other's shows and sometimes form a consensus about things. And this year the consensus is "Damn the statistics and how these guys actually play. This year we're giving the award to Garrett".

Obviously…Watt has this hands down regardless of what he does Saturday…

    The media will screw him.

The dumb NFL media has a built-in story if TJ wins. The TJ vs Jj questions would be endless.

But for whatever reason they want Garrett to win it.

Yeah, just like the last season it seems like there is a push by the media to give the award to Myles Garrett or Micah Parsons. Myles and Micah have been great, but TJ does deserve the award for a 2nd time. His impact on games for a defensive player is 2nd to none, and his stats are better as well if a person just wants to go by statistics.

Congratulations to TJ for leading the league in sacks again for an NFL record third time. His accomplishments are approaching that of his brother.

Myles has quieted down for the past month and half. Parsons might get canceled out in votes by another big playmaker on his own defense Daron Bland. Is it possible that TJ has lapped his edge rushing peers enough that his real contenders ARENT edge rushers?

They’ll still give it to Garrett…but it shouldn’t even be close.

It would be an injustice, Watt leads statistically in almost every category.

It will go to Garrett. He was the most dominant player on a statistically overwhelmingly dominant defense. That gets a ton of votes right or wrong.

FWIW, what the Browns defense did this year is on a historic pace.

Other than their PPG was 13th. For me, that's more important than YPG.

and we were 6th in PPG defense despite missing 2 out of 3 of our best defensive players for huge swathes of the season

It almost never seems about real justice. It is often about who people think should win because it's "their time" in the eyes of the voters.

It is supposed to go to the most dominant player. The player that has the biggest impact on games.

I don't see another player in the NFL that impacts the game in so many ways as TJ Watt.

He has more sacks than all the guys that do nothing but rush the passer.

He also drops in coverage. He defends and intercepts passes.

He knocks down tons of passes at the LOS.

He always has as many tackles for loss as anyone.

His team seems to be incapable of winning a game without him.

Teams try to stop him as much or more than any other player in pass protection with double teams, lining 1 or even 2 tight ends over him that make him have to choose where to line up.

He is messed with in every possible way to try to slow him down. I have seen three or four players on a single play be part of stopping TJ Watt.

The dude is just a menace on a football field, and he has more ways to beat you than any other player in the NFL. He is truly an All-time great player.

When your closest comparison in the history of the game is Lawrence Taylor, you are doing things at a level that others can't match.

When TJ came in I was thinking if he could just come close to JJs performance how good he would be. He's surpassed my lofty hopes. Your Lawrence Taylor comment is spot on.

By that reasonable criteria, Polamalu should’ve won every year.

Someone like Fred Warner or Roquan Smith should be under consideration this year.

I don’t disagree with what people are saying. But the year end awards are never picked under the criteria most fans might want.

I know it’s ridiculous but I’d vote for Stroud for MVP. Without him the Texans are not in the playoffs.

The media like spreading things around when they can. So they like giving it to players who never got it before. Thus Garrett will get it. And they will try their best to get it to Micah Parsons next year

Myles Garrett stat line from the playoff game?

Two tackles, one assist - 0 QB Hits, 0 TFL, 0 Sacks, 0 INTs, 0 PD, Played 85% of all Defensive snaps. Great outing for the DPOY...

Forgot abut those. In his defense, the first one I thought was BS.
